Adored Austin

weardrobe profile: Indiana Adams
blog: www.adoredaustin.com

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I'm Indiana Adams, and I live in Austin, Texas. I act and write, full-time. I married an insanely good-looking and incredibly charming computer nerd/ musician. My dog cracks me up, and my garden is doing well. If I had a pet fawn or an unlimited supply of sno-cones, I'd be living the dream!

2. Why did you start blogging?

I had a blog about acting that was doing well, but I was "gently encouraged" by my agent to cut it out. Something about "directors don't want you blogging" and "you want people to take you seriously" and blah blah blah. Around that same time I was reading like 20 personal style blogs because I love fashion. Finally one day last winter I was like, "I miss blogging. I love clothes. I should do that for a blog and find a way to keep it funny." And ta-da! Thus Adored Austin came into the world.

3. Where do you gain your style inspiration?

Holy smokes! Have you seen some of the Weardrobe users and their own fashion blogs? I love how people have chosen to put together an outfit and then share it...read more »

Black and White

A trend that never goes out of style. You can pull inspiration from your favorite style icons of the past like Audrey Hepburn and Twiggy. Bring in present trends to make the look modern or interpret it as a revitalized version of a vintage look.

Proper. Classic. Playful. Rocker. Mod. Antique. Black and white fits the bill however you draw it. One of my favorite looks is a classic well-fitted black suit with a white tee underneath- it oozes confidence. For a sweet lady-like look pair a sweet white top with a full black skirt. Add some femme fatale red lipstick and you are straight out of the ‘40s. ;)

As the leggings make their tenure known, I am all about throwing on a white graphic tee and leather jacket to complete the Euro- Urban look. Mess up your hair and add some engineer boots and you are Kate Moss personified. read more »

Clad in Plaid

I vividly remember my first foray with plaid flannel as a style choice. It was circa 1993 and I was obsessed with everyone’s favorite redheaded teenage rebel Angela Chase. I still even have my first plaid flannel - a teal a magenta shirt swiped from my dad’s closet. It’s softer now than ever. While the seemingly iconic piece still looks effortlessly cool thrown over a pair of comfy skinny jeans, this season, Weardrober’s are proving it to be so much more. The uniform of teenage angst and 90's grunge rock is getting a make over.

Like every great wardrobe staple, plaid flannel works with everything. This season has given us the beloved pattern on skirts, dresses, jackets, pants and of course, shirts. So, how do you make it your own?

Here are 4 ways to make plaid flannel work for you:

1. Look for a revamped silhouette. A plaid shirt with billowy sleeves and a drapey bodice is undoubtedly romantic, but you could kick it up a notch with something more structured like a moto jacket.

2. Pair it with the unexpected. Hello, plaid flannel shirt and leather skirt combo! Everybody’s doing it, but there’s a good reason ... it looks awesome! Looking for something different, though? Try belting a long flannel shirtdress with a studded or leopard print belt

The Little Black Dress

There are some acronyms that the average person is just meant to recognize. FBI. PB&J. And of course, The BFG. (Big Friendly Giant, hello Roald Dahl.) But, you my friend, are not the average person and in addition to governmental agencies, after school snacks and over-sized protagonists in children's novels, you also happen to have the infamous LBD under your (fashion) vocabulary belt.

The little black dress, the staple item of many women's closets, is known to add that touch of class and timelessness to any wardrobe. Dressed up with pearls or down with a grandpa cardigan, the LBD knows no fashion boundaries, just look at the ladies before us for proof. Crusaded by Coco, popularized by Audrey and made extremely versatile by women like you and me, it's hard to deny its utter appeal.

Undoubtedly, you already own one (or 20!) so here is a quick rundown of 4 ways the LBD can work for you:

1. Classic Audrey LBD:
No LBD editorial would be complete without paying homage to the one and only Audrey Hepburn. Ms. Holly Golightly herself made the LBD, pearls and oversized sunnies a lasting winning combination, one that is easy (and fun!) to mimic today for dinner parties, black tie affairs or even eating breakfast outside of a high-end jewelry department store. You know, whatever floats your boat.

2. 9 to 5 LBD:
Sometimes it's easy to look at your LBD and write it off as too "dressy" for work, depending on the cut of it. I say to hell with that. With the overabundance of blazers and tweed suit jackets on both the runways and in magazines lately, try giving your dress a little bit of structure up top and then pairing it with platform pumps for extra punch below. Throw in some tights (extra points for colored or patterned), because, well, why not?

Trendspotting Dots

I have to admit something: lately, i’ve been obsessed with polka dots! certainly, this timeless classic evokes such pop culture icons as minnie mouse in her frilly little dress or a retro fun-in-the-sun teeny weeny bikini, but after recently spotting the likes of alexa chung and chloe sevigny stylishly donning dots, and with polka dots popping up all over the spring 2010 runways, i’ve suddenly found myself smitten with spots!

Adding a few polka dots can instantly add just a touch fun and whimsy to any outfit, whilst always maintaining a certain air of sophistication. it’s a classic mix of flirty and feminine with just a slightly retro feel. so whether you want to make a bold statement in oversized spots or look classy and chic in teeny tiny dots, it’s a fun and easy addition to any wardrobe.

This fall, i’ve already started incorporating spots into my wardrobe, pulling inspiration from the runways and from fashionable bloggers on the net. but if you’re still a little hesitant about incorporating dots into your wardrobe,

here are a few tips to get you started:

1. start off with only one polka dotted piece at a time. this might be a simple statement dress, or a cute pair of sheer dotted tights in place of your usual black stockings.

2. as a rule of thumb, the smaller the dots, the easier to wear. go for oversized dots if you'd really like to make a statement, but beware, larger dots can overwhelm a petite frame or accentuate a curvy figure.

3. black and white dots are classic, but if you'd like something a bit more fun and youthful, try a mix of bright colors.

will you be spotted in polka dots this fall?

Be Theatrical!

I may not be one to make incredibly bold or impressive statements with my clothing, but I love seeing people, looks, and editorials inspired by performers. Whether it be musicians, famous historical figures or characters from literature or film, I cannot get enough of theatrical dressing. I love it when people conceptualize what they wear and really try to make a statement... my aim is to be more dramatic when it comes to my evolving personal style.

Take, for example, these two editorials from recent issues of Harper’s Bazaar and i-D: Agyness Deyn dons an eclectic combination of clothing, paying homage to the late, great Michael Jackson. Raquel Zimmerman (with the help of stylist Alasdair McLellan) pulls together a look that is a striking representation of 80s icon, Debbie Harry.

Agyness as MJ

Raquel as Blondie

Steven Meisel’s editorial titled, “Performance,” in Vogue Italia’s September 2009 issue is a perfect representation of interpreting theater through fashion. The first photograph in the editorial is a faux-playbill cover with four....continue reading »

Diane is Darling Darling

weardrobe profile: darlingdarling
blog: recycleddarling.blogspot.com

1. Tell us about yourself and why you decided to start blogging.

I'm a 23 year old library school student living in the Bay Area (and completely biased towards it...Yay Area!). I was actually convinced to start blogging by my boyfriend. I wanted to start an Etsy shop selling vintage clothes after I quit one of my part-time jobs earlier this year and he thought it'd be a good idea to have a blog to support it. Now it's more of a "here's-some-stuff-I-like" kind of a blog but everybody's so supportive in the blog community that it's made this whole endeavor really fun.

2. How do you describe your style and how does it change with the seasons or trends? Have you seen your style going in a certain direction?

Eesh, I always have a hard time with this question. Well, I've always been a bit of a tomboy. I didn't start wearing skirts or dresses or anything remotely feminine until I was about 18 and now I love 'em! I try to meld these two aspects of me together so my style comes off as a bit androgynous, I suppose. The phrase "geek chic" has been thrown around a few times on comments and I'm pretty okay with that. I don't think my style is going in any specific direction - it's sort of willy-nilly. I'll just take each outfit as it comes!

The Com-Pleat Package

Perfectly folded row-after-row is the look of yesteryear - pleated clothing. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see this trend emerging in the community lately – not the least of all on Weardrobe. Pleats may not be a newly-discovered trend passed down by the fashion gods, but it’s one that is apparent and flourishing on this website. I’m a true fan of the pleated style and I never miss a photo that that features this design.

That’s what makes sites like Weardrobe so special, it’s an outlet for fashion that may not be the current mass trend, but is significant enough to share with fashionable people around the world. It’s always those clean, crisp folds that call out to style mavens as a way of making one’s outfit unique and stylish. Pleats come in an array of different formats, the skirt being its biggest fan. You can also find pleats today happily rustling on dresses, tops, purses, scarves and socks. You name it, you can probably find pleats on it.

So where did this trend begin, and why did it become so prevalent in fashion?

Cut and Sew with Nicole

weardrobe profile: Nicole Ognibene
blog: cutandsew.wordpress.com

1. Tell us about yourself and why you decided to start your fashion blog

I've been in love with sewing for as long as I can remember. I learned how to sew when I was six and have been at it ever since, so when it was time for me to decide what I wanted to major in it was kind of a no brainer. Apparel Design and Merchandise Management were the only options. When I couldn't decide between the two I thought, "Hey, why not do both." So that lead me to my final decision of majoring in Apparel Design and Merchandise Management with a minor in Visual Arts at Oregon State University. Most people are awe struck when I say I moved from Orange County, an hour outside of the infamous LA and LA Garment District to the small town of Corvallis to pursue my interest in Fashion, but honestly, I would have it no other way. I find the small town of Corvallis so much more inspiring than the constant hustle and bustle of the large city.

During my freshman year at Oregon State I was introduced to the blogging world. I instantly became addicted to Fashion Blogs. I was constantly checking them for the latest updates, my favorites including thistimetomorrow-krystal.blogspot.com and whatiwore.tumblr.com. I couldn't go a day without checking the latest posts, some days I even checked them two or three times. After a while, I finally came to the conclusion that I could totally do that. They were just average girls sharing with the world their love of fashion and I decided I had to be a part of this. So that is when I decided to start blogging. My brother and his girlfriend helped me a lot, they both have blogs so they were able to give me the inside scoop on the best host sites and told me the best way to gain readers.

Fur For All Ages

Perhaps the most glaringly obvious trend out right now (or is it the most glaringly AWESOME), is wearing fur. It is literally everywhere- from the windows of Barney’s, Henri Bendel and Louis Vuitton on 5th avenue in NYC, to mass market stores like Bebe, Zara, and H&M. You can find real and faux, high-end or low, or preferably thrifted- there is nothing more satisfying than knowing your most versatile, compliment-inspiring piece this fall cost under $10.

Fur pieces today take the form of almost anything you can think of- coats, vests, hats, stoles, and even little furry accents in unexpected places- topping a pair of wool knee socks, circling the shoulder seams of a cardigan, or peeking out of the pockets of a jacket.

On a recent shopping trip to Neiman Marcus Last Call, I saw a stylish older woman grab a fur caplet off the rack, and then return five minutes later because her teenaged granddaughter had seen it and wanted her own to match... continue reading »

Mixed Prints

The fashion mavens I admire most are those who are utterly fearless in their outfit choices. Unfortunately, I’m not naturally so bold in my personal outfits, but it is something I work towards. Trying new things can be scary, but having the support and involvement of a community can make a world of difference.

So, here is the thought: a weekly fashion challenge designed to expose new trends and push us all to our limits. Each week a specific trend or item is highlighted and broken down, then everyone is invited and challenged to try it out, photograph it and share it with the rest of the community.

Let’s get the ball rolling with this week’s feature: mixed prints. This look keeps popping up on the runways every season, has inspired numerous fashion editorials, and is even documented on street fashion sites. When done right this style looks fresh and chic, but there is the potential to go horribly wrong.

Here are a few tips and tricks to pulling off mixed prints »

Jen Loves Kev

weardrobe profile: Jennifer Lula
blog: www.jenloveskev.com

1. Tell us about yourself and how your blog came to be.

My name is Jen Lula, I am 27 years old, I have been married for 3 years and I currently live out in the Berkshires in Western MA. I am a high school art teacher by day and a fashion junky and artist by night. I have a very creative spirit so I just love anything that I can express that with whether being fashion, art, interior design or cooking.

My blog started 3 years ago when my husband and myself moved to Hawaii right after we got married. I wanted to be able to share pictures with friends and family about all our adventures and having a blog was the best way to do that. When we eventually moved back, I had become quite in love with blogging and it sort of just evolved into what it is today. Jenloveskev now is a place where I share daily style posts, recipes I cook, Outfits I'd like to wear, my artwork, and the everyday adventures in our life.
